Indian convicted of insulting prophet on Facebook in Dubai

In Dubai, a man was sentenced to imprisonment for an insulting post on social networks in relation to the prophet Muhammad.

On Thursday, December 14, 2017, a Dubai court of first instance sentenced a 34-year-old worker of Indian descent to imprisonment for three months for ridiculing Islam on Facebook. The man shared a caricature of the Prophet Muhammad on a social network.

Police received a violation report from a colleague of the accused. The telephone from which the publication was made was confiscated. According to the accused, he did not know that the photo makes fun of the prophet.

The man will also be fined 5,000 dirhams ($ 1.36 thousand). An accused who has not pleaded guilty will be deported after serving his sentence, the presiding judge decided.

The decision is subject to appeal within 15 days.
