Senator from Karachay-Cherkessia Rauf Arashukov was detained in the Council Chamber of the Federation on Wednesday, a source attending a meeting of the upper house told TASS.

Before the arrest of the 32-year-old parliamentarian, the plenary session of the Federation Council was unexpectedly closed to the press, and the employees of the Federal Security Service blocked the entrance to the hall.

"They gave consent to the detention and search of the senator from Karachay-Cherkessia Arashukov. He was detained and taken out of the hall," the agency’s source said. He noted that Arashukov was accused of several crimes, including the organization of a criminal community.

The BAZA telegram channel, without reference to sources, reported that a fake passport was discovered by the detainee, according to which he planned to fly to the United Arab Emirates.

Recall that in September 2018, RBC reported that law enforcement agencies of the United Arab Emirates became interested in the member of the Federation Council from Karachay-Cherkessia Rauf Arashukov. Allegedly, he was charged with falsification and use of forged documents. This followed from the official letters of the Prosecutor General of Dubai, a copy and notarized translation of which were at the disposal of RBC.

The authenticity of the letters was confirmed by the deputy of the City Council of Cherkessk Ruslan Kardanov, who was indicated in the documents as the applicant in the criminal case. "There were suspicions that Arashukov provided fake documents from the UAE that he had closed his residence permit before the senatorial office. I made a deputy request through the law office in Dubai. I was informed that a criminal case has been opened, the investigation is ongoing," explained RBC Kardanov .

Arashukov became a senator on September 18, 2016. According to the law "On the status of a member of the Federation Council and the status of a deputy of the State Duma of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation," a senator cannot be a resident of another state. Arashukov needed a forgery in order to freely occupy the senator’s chair, follows from Kardanov’s statement.
