Elite Car Number Buyer Spends 3 Years in UAE Prison

A US $ 8.4 million license plate buyer in Abu Dhabi has been jailed for 3 years.

An entrepreneur who pleaded guilty to fraud will spend 3 years in Abu Dhabi prison.

In November 2016, the 33-year-old emirate bought an elite car number at auction - No. 1 for 31 million dirhams ($ US 8.4 million). He was detained at the request of the organizers of the auction. It turned out that the man was trying to pay for the lot with an unsecured check.

During interrogation, the emirate admitted that he provided a check, realizing that there was not enough money in the bank account to secure the purchase. He said that he planned to resell a rare number and after that to compensate his debt to the authorities.

However, transactions completed before full payment are considered illegal.

The Abu Dhabi court previously sentenced the emirate to three years in prison after being convicted of fraud. The Abu Dhabi Court of Appeal upheld the decision of the first court.
