New records set at FINA World Swimming Championships in Dubai

The team of swimmers Team Speedo from the United Arab Emirates, who took part in the 10th FINA World Short Course Swimming Championships, won the relay race 4 in 100 meters, setting a record included in the Guinness Book of Records.

During the first qualifying round of the preliminary competitions held at the recently built Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Sports Complex at the 10th FINA World Short Course Swimming Championships, Obeid Al Jesmi, captain of the UAE national swimming team, showed a record time in 4 x 100 m freestyle relay race with his brothers Said, Bakit and Faisal. "The UAE national team is a family for me, however, today the feeling of family is especially strong for us, since we became the first ever team in the freestyle relay at the FINA Championship, consisting of brothers," Al Jesmi said in an interview. “Believe me, this is a unique feeling. We are all very happy that we were able to take part in this championship in one team and win it.”

It should be noted that on this day, surprises and new records did not end. American swimmer Ryan Lochte set a new championship record by swimming a 200-meter freestyle race in 1: 42.38. And the Russians Stanislav Donets, Stanislav Lakhtyukhov, Evgeny Korotyshkin and Nikita Lobintsev became silver medalists in the combined relay of 4-100 meters. In general, the Russian team took second place in the overall medal standings of the World Short Course Championships, which ended in Dubai on December 19, 2010. The Russians won 10 medals, of which 4 gold, 4 silver and 2 bronze. Stanislav Donets excelled at distances of 50 and 100 meters on the back, Yevgeny Korotyshkin won the 100-meter butterfly stroke, Nikita Lobintsev became the second crawl at a distance of 400 meters and the third - at the 100-meter freestyle. Also among the medalists were Danila Izotov and Sergey Fesikov. The best result of the women's team - fourth place in the combined relay of 4 to 100 meters.

The United States team was the most successful in the UAE, with 12 gold, 6 silver and 7 bronze medals. Closed the top three Spaniards (4-2-2). A total of 40 sets of medals were won at the Dubai World Cup. The national teams of China and Australia were ahead of the Russian team in the number of medals (14 and 11, respectively), but lost in their quality. The Chinese - 3 gold, 5 silver and 6 bronze medals, the Australians - only one award of the highest merit.
